Overview

We are pleased to announce a special public art song masterclass in Tokyo with Prof. Hartmut Höll, one of the world’s foremost Lied pianists, who has collaborated for many years with internationally acclaimed singers, including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Renée Fleming, and Mitsuko Shirai.

This masterclass offers a rare opportunity to study directly with Prof. Höll, whose distinguished international career has made a significant contribution to the art of Lieder and art song.

Participants will explore the profound relationship between words and music, as well as the artistic partnership between singer and pianist.

Date: Thursday, April 22, 2027

Time: 1:00 PM – approximately 6:30 PM

Venue: Kioicho Salon Hall, Tokyo, Japan

Number of Participants: Maximum 5 selected duos or solo singers

Lesson Duration: 50 minutes per session

Eligibility

Vocal students, professional singers, and pianists studying Lieder and art song.

Applicants may apply either as a singer–pianist duo or as a solo singer.

Certificate of Completion

A certificate personally signed by Prof. Hartmut Höll will be awarded upon completion of the masterclass.

Application Period

Selection Process

Participants will be selected through a video audition evaluated by Prof. Hartmut Höll.

Video Audition Requirements

* Submit a performance video of 1–2 German Lieder, with a total duration of no more than 8 minutes.
* Upload your video to YouTube as Unlisted and submit the video URL with your application.

Announcement of Selection Results

Friday, January 22, 2027 (scheduled)

All applicants will be notified individually of the selection results.

Fees

Application Fee (Video Audition)

* Applicants from Japan: JPY 16,500 (tax included) per application
* International Applicants: JPY 18,000 per application

The application fee is the same for solo singers and duos.

International applicants must pay via PayPal.

Masterclass Participation Fee

JPY 55,000 (tax included) per 50-minute session

Official Accompanist (Optional)

From JPY 22,000 (subject to consultation)

Interpretation Service (Optional)

JPY 7,000 (tax included) per 50 minutes

Public Masterclass & Auditing

This masterclass will be open to the public.

It offers a valuable opportunity for vocal and piano students, professional musicians, music educators, and all those interested in Lieder and art song to observe Prof. Hartmut Höll’s teaching at close range.
