Category

Qualifications: Any nationality

1. High school student division (15 years old to 18 years old)

2. University and graduate student division (18 years old to 26 years old)

3. Young artist division (26 years old to 32 years old)

4. Professional division (33 years old and over, no age limit)

5. Enthusiast division A. 20 years old to under 40 years old B. 40 years old to under 60 years old C. 60 years old and over

6. Musical division A. 15 years old or younger B. 16 years old or older to 19 years old or younger C. 20 years old or older to 26 years old or younger

D. 27 years old or older to 35 years old or younger

*Academic background and past awards are not important.

*University and graduate students: Includes those currently undergoing vocal training at educational institutions or under individuals that are considered to be equivalent.

*Age restrictions: The age as of the application deadline.

*The definition of an enthusiast in our competition refers to those who are not currently working as professional opera singers.

Selected Pieces

A. Oratorio B. Song C. Opera D. Operetta E. Musical Works

Baroque (1600-1750) Classical (1750-1820)

Romantic (1820-1920) Modern/Contemporary (1920 onwards, including musical works)

- Selected pieces must be performed in the original language. However, any language that is conventionally accepted is acceptable.

- All sections must be performed with piano accompaniment. (Exceptions: unaccompanied songs, vocal works, etc.)

- Songs may be transposed from the original key.

- Songs composed for instrumental music may be performed. (Example: The Shepherd on the Rock, by Schubert)

- If the introduction or interlude is too long, it is okay to cut it.

- All selected pieces must be performed vocally.

- For musical works, be sure to write the name of the work and the name of the character. Original or translated versions are acceptable.

 

Competition procedure

All categories are free to select a piece of music. (Multiple pieces allowed)

One round

You may freely select the repertoire that best reflects your musicality and artistry from the above selection pieces. You cannot enter pieces with unpublished sheet music or original compositions.

1. High school students (up to 6 minutes)

2. University and graduate students (up to 8 minutes)

3. Young artists (up to 10 minutes)

4. Professionals (up to 10 minutes)

5. Enthusiasts (up to 6 minutes)

6. Musical (up to 8 minutes)

・In our competition, the definition of an enthusiast is someone who is not currently working as a professional opera singer.

How to enter

・Apply via our website and application form (formrun system).

・Request: Please set your email settings to receive emails from the formrun system and baselvocalconcours@gmail.com.

・Please attach a copy of proof of age (student ID, driver's license, passport, etc.) and the entry fee payment slip.

・In principle, videos must be recorded after January 2024.

・Please submit videos recorded for the competition with piano accompaniment.

・Performances should be recorded in music studios, salons, large/small halls, music practice rooms, at home, etc.

・Orchestral accompaniment is not permitted.

・Must sing from memory.

・Perform facing forward, with upper body or whole body visible.

・Record with the pianist's performance visible.

・Send the URL of the video uploaded to YouTube.(the set the privacy setting to Unlisted.)

・Please adhere to the performance time specified for each category.

・Record the video with an adjustable volume.

・Recording conditions will also be taken into consideration.

・If you are performing a piece that is subject to copyright, please apply in advance.

(Since copyright laws differ from country to country, if you are performing a copyrighted work, you must apply in advance and pay for the fee yourself.)

・Several videos may be submitted separately.

・No changes to the video will be allowed after submission.

・No deletion of the video will be allowed after submission without our instructions.

・The order of entries will not affect the ranking in any way.

・The entry deadline is 12pm Japan time.

・Please prepare your entry well in advance.

・Incomplete entries may result in points being deducted.

・Please be sure to check the website for any updates.

 

Participation Fee

1. High School Students: 13,000 yen

2. University and Graduate Students: 14,000 yen

3. Young Artists: 15,000 yen

4. Professionals: 15,000 yen

5. Entrants: A. B. C.: 13,000 yen

6. Musicalists: A. B. C. D. E.: 13,000 yen

 

*Applicants from outside Japan should pay by PayPal.

 

Prizes

Grand Prize: 200,000 yen

Second Prize: 100,000 yen

Best Opera Prize: 100,000 yen

Supraleitung Methode Prize: Swiss Music Publishing, voice instruction book

1st to 6th place in each category, Jury Prize, Encouragement Prize, Selected Prize

Second Prize

Invitation to the Basel Music Festival Autumn 2025 at Oji Hall, Ginza, Tokyo on Sunday, November 2, 2025.

Grand Prize winner will be invited to perform at the music festival, and the organizers will cover airfare and accommodation costs.

Second Prize winner will be invited to perform at the music festival, and the organizers will cover accommodation costs.

・First place in each category will be invited to perform at a music festival (free of charge)

・Top prize winners will be invited to perform at a music festival (some ticket vouchers)

・Supraleitung Methode Award - Book presented

Certificate

・Certificates will be sent by post within Japan, and electronic certificates will be sent overseas.

Certificates will not be reissued once issued.

 

Participation Rules

・All media, including internet, newspapers, magazines, etc., related to the competition will belong to the 5th Basel International Vocal Competition.

・Entry will only be accepted through the entry application form.

・Entrants must check the results on the special website.

・Comments will be sent by email approximately one month after the competition.

・The number of judges will vary depending on the category. The number of judges may change due to the judges' circumstances. Thank you for your understanding.

・In principle, the Grand Prize winner and runner-up are required to perform at the music festival. If they are unable to perform, the full prize money will not be awarded.

・The performers for the music festival will be selected by our executive committee.

・The prize money will be transferred by telegraph within two months after the end of the competition.

・Prize money will only be awarded to those who strictly adhere to our terms and conditions. In the case of outstanding performances that qualify for a prize money, it will be divided and awarded to multiple winners.

・The performances of the top prize winners designated by our company may be made public to third parties.

・If an entrant deletes a video without instructions during the event period, the entrant will be disqualified.

・If a winner deletes a video without instructions after the prize money has been awarded, the prize money will be returned and the prize will be revoked.

・If any action that violates our terms and conditions is discovered after the award has been given, or if the Executive Committee determines that the action violates our terms and conditions, the prize will be returned and the entrant's prize will be revoked.

・If any misrepresentation of age, educational background, etc. is discovered, the prize will be revoked.

・The personal information of entrants will be managed strictly by the Executive Committee.

・The event may be canceled if it is impossible to carry out due to force majeure (natural disasters, war, civil unrest, etc.).

・The entry period may be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic or the global situation.

・If the global situation makes it necessary to change the terms and conditions, we reserve the right to do so.

・In principle, entry fees will not be refunded under any circumstances after an entrant has applied.

・If any words or actions that are defamatory of our company are discovered, the prize will be revoked and appropriate measures will be taken. We will ask the recipient of the prize to return it.

・We will not accept any objections regarding the scoring method, the prize money set by our company, etc.
